Stairlift servicing and repairs

For existing owners, whether we fitted your lift or not. Tell us what has changed and we will arrange for it to be looked at.

If you have any concern about safety

Stop using the stairlift and telephone us on 0800 530 0025. Use the stairs on foot if it is safe to do so, or ask someone to help. The freephone line is answered around the clock.

Please do not dismantle, adjust, oil or attempt to repair any part of the lift, and please do not ask anyone who is not a stairlift engineer to look at it.

Arrange a visit

Send us the address where the stairlift is installed, roughly when it was fitted, and what you have noticed. We will come back to you to arrange a time.

Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Appointments outside these hours can be arranged.

Routine servicing

A stairlift is a moving piece of equipment used every day. A service being due does not mean anything is wrong.

What a visit covers

  • A check that the lift travels smoothly along the full length of the rail.
  • Operation of the controls, seatbelt, footrest, swivel and folding parts.
  • A check of the safety sensors that stop the lift if something is in the way.
  • A look at the rail fixings and the charging points.
  • Battery changes and common wear items, plus cleaning and adjustment.

As a general guide a yearly check suits most lifts, although it depends on the components fitted and how often the lift is used. Telephone us and we will advise on yours.

Between visits

  • Park the lift on its charging point when it is not in use.
  • Keep the rail and the stairs clear of shoes, bags and post.
  • Wipe the seat and armrests with a dry or slightly damp cloth only.
  • Tell us about any new noise, hesitation or warning light.

There is nothing you need to open, oil or adjust yourself.

Repairs and call-outs

Most problems begin quietly. Reporting a change early is usually simpler than waiting until the lift stops altogether.

Signs worth reporting

  • The lift travels more slowly than usual, or hesitates along the rail.
  • New grinding, clicking or rubbing noises.
  • The lift stops before it reaches the top or the bottom.
  • A control, seatbelt, footrest or swivel that feels loose or unresponsive.
  • Warning lights or repeated beeping.
  • The lift does not respond at all.

What to have ready when you call

  • The address where the stairlift is installed.
  • Roughly when it was installed, and whether Direct Stairlifts fitted it.
  • What happens, and where on the stairs it happens.
  • Any lights, beeps or messages you have noticed.
  • A telephone number we can reach you on during the day.

Coverage, charges and lifts fitted by others

Charges
Charges depend on the visit and any parts involved, and are always explained to you before work goes ahead.
Coverage
Our engineers live locally and cover Derby, Derbyshire and the wider Midlands.
Lifts fitted by other companies
Often no problem. A few components are manufacturer-supply only, so occasionally a part has to be ordered in and a second visit arranged.
